Roger DiTarando: Master Sculptor of Animal-Themed Metal Art

Embarking on my artistic journey over 45 years ago, I, Roger DiTarando, initially focused on animal-themed metal art, primarily working with welded mild steel. As my craft evolved, I embraced materials like copper, bronze, and stainless steel, creating original, one-of-a-kind sculptures. These pieces were intricate and labor-intensive, but without a substantial client base or exposure, sustaining this approach became challenging.

On a sweltering August day, while welding under the oppressive heat, I had an epiphany: my art needed to evolve into pieces that could be replicated. This realization led to the development of my well-known otters, herons, goats, and other creations. While I continued crafting original works, I also began designing a series of new pieces.

Spirited Sculptures

However, parting with these cherished originals proved difficult, especially when faced with undervaluation. Reluctantly, I stored a dozen or so in a shipping container, where they remained concealed, gathering dust and cobwebs, nearly forgotten for over 35 years. Among these hidden treasures were the flamboyant ostriches, the resilient rhinoceros, and the elegant llama. A few of these spirited sculptures still exist, having been overlooked and tucked away, out of sight and out of mind.

Reflecting on this journey, I can't help but chuckle at my ambitious leap into replication with "Three Sheets to the Wind." Embarking on such an elaborate project—three whimsical, inebriated pigs pointing in different directions atop a cloud-shaped weathervane—might have seemed overzealous for a first endeavor. Sculpting in clay, creating plaster molds, and producing detailed bronze castings, the process spanned three years, on and off. In hindsight, perhaps starting with a simpler project would have been wiser, but where's the fun in that? This piece, measuring 48 inches in both height and length, never fails to elicit smiles and hearty laughter from all who encounter it.

Throughout my career, I've been fortunate to build enduring friendships and receive unwavering support and encouragement from mentors, peers, and patrons. These relationships have been instrumental in my growth as an artist and have enriched my creative journey.

Beyond Sculptures

Beyond my sculptures, my work adorns gardens, homes, and museums. My weathervanes have become rural landmarks, and my efforts in historical and contemporary architectural restorations have revitalized buildings, bringing them to life for countless city-dwellers. Whether you're exploring works in the gallery or commissioning a piece, prepare to embark on a journey where sculpted forms come alive and tell a thousand tales.

I invite you to explore my collection and discover the stories each piece holds.
